Before You Panic: Try These Essentials

Your computer froze. Won’t turn on. Running slow.

Before you:

Try these proven troubleshooting steps. Most take under 10 minutes and solve 80% of startup and performance issues.

🚨 For other problems? See Part 2 (WiFi, printer, audio issues) or Part 3 (crashes, system failures) below.

Problem #1: Computer is Frozen (Nothing Responds)

Symptoms: Mouse won’t move, clicks do nothing, Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn’t work

Fix: Force Restart

Windows:

  1. Hold the Power button for 10 seconds until it shuts off
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Turn it back on

Mac:

  1. Hold Cmd + Option + Power button for 10 seconds
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Turn it back on

Prevention: Don’t run 47 browser tabs with video editing software while downloading 10 files. Close unused programs.

Problem #2: Computer Won’t Turn On

Symptoms: Black screen, no lights, no fan noise

Fix: Check Power & Connections

Laptop:

  1. Plug in charger and wait 15 minutes
  2. Try a different outlet
  3. Check if charging light comes on
  4. If no light, charger might be dead (try borrowing one to test)

Desktop:

  1. Check if power cable is fully plugged into wall AND computer
  2. Flip the power switch on the back of the computer (easy to accidentally hit)
  3. Test outlet with another device

Mac-specific:

Still nothing? Likely hardware issue. Time to call for help or visit a repair shop.

Problem #3: Computer is Really Slow

Symptoms: Takes forever to boot, programs lag, spinning wheel of death

Fix: The Slowness Checklist

Step 1: Restart (solves 30% of slowness issues)

Step 2: Check Disk Space

Step 3: Disable Startup Programs

Windows:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc (opens Task Manager)
  2. Click Startup tab
  3. Right-click programs you don’t need at startup → Disable
    • Keep: Antivirus, cloud storage (if you use it)
    • Disable: Spotify, Skype, Adobe Creative Cloud, anything you don’t use daily

Mac:

  1. System PreferencesUsers & GroupsLogin Items
  2. Select items you don’t need → Click (minus button)

Step 4: Update Everything

Step 5: Run Malware Scan

Still slow? You might need more RAM, an SSD upgrade, or a deep clean. That’s when you call us.
