Is your PC taking forever to start up? Programs freezing? You’re not alone. Most slow computer problems can be fixed without spending a dime on upgrades.

Why Is My PC Slow?

Common causes:

Quick Wins (5 Minutes)

1. Restart Your Computer

Sounds obvious, but many people just put their PC to sleep. A full restart clears memory and stops background processes.

How:

2. Close Unnecessary Browser Tabs

Each tab uses memory. If you have 20+ tabs open, your PC is working overtime.

Check your tabs:

3. Check for Windows Updates

Updates include performance fixes and security patches.

How:

  1. Press Windows Key + I → Update & Security
  2. Click “Check for updates”
  3. Install all available updates
  4. Restart when prompted

Disable Startup Programs (10 Minutes)

Most programs add themselves to startup without asking. This slows down boot time.

How to disable:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  2. Click the “Startup” tab
  3. Right-click programs you don’t need at startup
  4. Select “Disable”

Safe to disable:

DO NOT disable:

After disabling, restart your PC and notice the difference.

Free Up Disk Space (15 Minutes)

A full hard drive drastically slows everything down. Aim for at least 15% free space.

Run Disk Cleanup

  1. Search “Disk Cleanup” in the Start menu
  2. Select your C: drive
  3. Check these boxes:
    • Temporary files
    • Downloads (if you’ve backed up important files)
    • Recycle Bin
    • Thumbnails
    • Windows Update Cleanup
  4. Click “Clean up system files”
  5. Wait for cleanup to finish

Uninstall Unused Programs

  1. Press Windows Key + I → Apps
  2. Sort by “Size” to see the biggest programs
  3. Uninstall anything you don’t use:
    • Old games
    • Trial software
    • Duplicate programs (multiple PDF readers, etc.)

Tip: If you’re unsure about a program, Google it first before uninstalling.

Stop Background Processes

Hidden apps running in the background can slow your PC without you knowing.

Check What’s Running

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  2. Click “Processes” tab
  3. Sort by “CPU” or “Memory”
  4. Look for unfamiliar programs using lots of resources

Disable Background Apps

  1. Press Windows Key + I → Privacy
  2. Scroll down to “Background apps”
  3. Turn off apps you don’t need running constantly

Good to keep on:

Turn off:

Update Drivers (10 Minutes)

Outdated drivers can cause slowdowns, freezes, and crashes.

Automatic Way (Easiest)

  1. Press Windows Key + X → Device Manager
  2. Right-click any device with a yellow warning icon
  3. Select “Update driver” → “Search automatically”

Manual Way (More Thorough)

  1. Visit your PC manufacturer’s website (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.)
  2. Go to “Support” or “Drivers”
  3. Enter your PC model number
  4. Download latest chipset, graphics, and network drivers
  5. Install them one by one, restarting after each

Priority drivers:

Adjust Visual Effects

Windows uses fancy animations that look nice but slow older PCs.

How to disable:

  1. Search “Performance” in Start menu
  2. Click “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”
  3. Select “Adjust for best performance”
  4. OR customize: uncheck unnecessary effects like:
    • Animations when minimizing/maximizing
    • Fade or slide effects
    • Shadows under windows

This makes Windows look less fancy but run much faster.

Scan for Malware

Malware can secretly use your CPU and memory.

Upgrade (When Free Fixes Aren’t Enough)

If your PC is still slow after trying everything above, consider:

Best upgrades for speed:

  1. SSD (Solid State Drive) — Biggest impact, ~$50-100 for 500GB
  2. More RAM — 8GB minimum, 16GB ideal, ~$30-60
  3. Clean dust from inside — Overheating slows performance
