Start with Windows’ built-in tools before installing a cleaner or optimizer. Free plans, features, and download pages can change, so check the publisher’s current terms and download from the official site.
Built Into Windows
Storage settings
Open Settings → System → Storage to review what is using disk space. Check each category before removing anything; temporary files can include items you still need, and personal-file categories such as Downloads should not be cleared blindly.
Task Manager
Use Task Manager → Startup apps to review programs configured to start with Windows. Disable an item only if you recognize it and understand what depends on it. If unsure, leave it enabled and look up the publisher first.
Windows Security
Windows Security includes antivirus and firewall protections. Keep protection enabled and use its built-in scan options when appropriate. Avoid running multiple real-time antivirus products together.
Backup options
Use a separate, tested backup for important files. Windows backup features vary by Windows version and configuration; check the current Microsoft documentation and confirm that you can open a backed-up file. File synchronization alone is not a complete backup.
Optional Downloads
Install software only when you need its specific function. Verify the publisher, operating-system compatibility, license, and privacy terms before downloading.
- 7-Zip — open-source file archiver. Use the official download page.
- Microsoft PowerToys — Microsoft’s collection of optional Windows utilities. Review each feature before enabling it.
- Everything — file-name search utility. Review its indexing and permission requirements before use.

Avoid High-Risk “Cleanup” Shortcuts
- Do not use registry cleaners or “one-click optimization” tools to repair routine performance issues.
- Do not delete files or disable startup items just because a tool labels them as junk or unnecessary.
- Do not use a drive-wiping tool unless you intend to permanently erase the selected drive and have verified your backups and target.
- Do not download installers from third-party repackaging sites or advertisements.
